Apr. 15—ST. MARIES — Parents won't be notified if their child's teacher is carrying a gun in the classroom next year in eastern Benewah County. "They can assume that everybody is armed," Seth Stoke, chairman of the St. Maries School Board said in an interview Monday night after the board voted 4-0 to finalize a policy that will allow permitted staff to carry concealed firearms inside the district's public schools.

The St. Maries School Board approved a final reading of its concealed carry policy late Monday night in a 4-0 vote, as well as a subpolicy outlining the application process. The district has about 900 students enrolled across four schools. District staff and school board trustees who are interested can apply to carry guns on school property under the policy.

Apr. 9—Speeders leaving Washington for Idaho will get a friendly reminder in the mail to slow down. Temporary traffic cameras over Interstate 90 in Liberty Lake will track eastbound speeding vehicles and their license plates as part of a pilot program beginning Thursday from the Washington State Department of Transportation. Registered owners of speeding vehicles will receive courtesy notices but no tickets or fines, according to a WSDOT news release. The speed limit through the zone is 70 mph.

Apr. 9—Impatient with hostility from neighbors and a lack of progress from Whitman County, Harvest Hills plans to apply for permits for its big wind turbine project from the state instead. "Because we see no path forward to a workable wind ordinance, Harvest Hills is beginning the pre-application process with the Washington Energy Facilities Site Evaluation Council," Harvest Hills' developer, Steelhead Americas, wrote in letter to the Whitman County Commission Tuesday.
