The Spartans’ men’s programs won the Talmadge Layman Hill all-men’s sports award for the second consecutive year, while the Bison women earned the Mary McLeod Bethune all-women’s sports award for the fourth year in a row.

    For the first time in their more than 100-year history, the Tuskegee football team will play a night game at Cleve Abbott Memorial Stadium. Tuskegee announced Thursday morning that its Saturday, Sept. 6, home game against SIAC opponent Central State will be played under newly installed lights at Abbott Memorial Stadium. This marks the first time the Shed will host a night game.

    Alabama State reigns supreme as the SWAC’s top all-around athletics program. Wednesday afternoon, ASU was announced as the conference’s annual winner of the James Frank Commissioner’s Cup, an award given to the school with the best performances in league-sponsored sports. ASU compiled a total score of 163 points, winning the Sadie McGee/Barbara Jacket award for women’s sports with a 94.5 score and a 68.5 score on the men’s side.

    No one needs to tell Florida A&M head football coach James Colzie III or Howard head coach Larry Scott the final score of the 2023 Celebration Bowl. “If anyone forgot, it was 30-26 Florida A&M,” Colzie said during this week’s Orange Blossom Classic press conference, which formally announced the rematch of the Rattlers and Bison Labor Day weekend in Miami Gardens. Both Scott and Colzie are excited to renew this rivalry, especially in one of the oldest HBCU Football classics in the country.

    A Howard University alum, long respected in sports journalism circles, is moving on this summer. Stan Verrett, who hosted the Los Angeles edition of ESPN’s flagship show SportsCenter, will not have his contract renewed when it expires in June, according to a report from Front Office Sports. “We’re grateful for Stan’s many contributions and all he has brought to SportsCenter over the years,” ESPN executive vice president and executive Dave Roberts said in a statement.
