An HBCU legend was owed and received an apology from TNT after false claims of his death were aired during the network’s NBA playoff coverage. Billy Ray Bates, who starred for Kentucky State in the 1970s and was a phenomenon for the Portland Trail Blazers, was thought to be deceased by Inside the NBA analyst Shaquille O’Neal and O’Neal stated as such during Sunday’s post-game coverage of the Cleveland Cavaliers/Miami Heat series opener.

The HBCU to Power 4 pipeline continues with one school’s leading receiver transferring to the ACC. Karate Brenson, who led Tennessee State in receiving yards during their Big South-OVC championship season, has signed with Wake Forest. Brenson becomes the latest Tiger to transfer out following the departure of Eddie George to Bowling Green. George has since been replaced by veteran HBCU coach Reggie Barlow.

The top freshman – and arguably one of the top players in HBCU men’s basketball last season — has announced his final four transfer portal choices. Blake Harper, who won the conference MEAC Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year awards for Howard, is deciding between the Bison, Big East school Creighton, LSU of the SEC and the Big Ten’s Ohio State. Howard transfer guard Blake Harper (@bharp__) is down to four schools per @KlutchSports.

Michael Vick’s Norfolk State tenure has already brought a considerable number of eyes to the football program and the university. And that amount will increase this coming fall, according to a report from Essence Magazine. Black Entertainment Television, in conjunction with SMAC Entertainment, will produce a docuseries chronicling Vick’s journey back home to Norfolk in leading the Spartans football program.

One HBCU who recently lost their head men’s basketball coach has found a replacement with quite the track record. 1993 Heisman trophy winner Charlie Ward, who played 11 seasons in the NBA, is expected to be named head men’s basketball coach at Florida A&M, as reported by HBCU basketball insider Olivia Antilla. The 5 year contract and details for Charlie Ward will be brought in front of the FAMU BOT today and most likely will be approved.
