The answer is Tranmere Rovers, who in July 1984 were bought by San Francisco lawyer Bruce Osterman. Like so many of the foreign takeovers that followed, it didn’t end well. Three years later Tranmere went into administration.

Harry Brook is unlikely to win any prizes for oratory, nor does he exude the aura of Eoin Morgan or Ben Stokes. But when looking at what makes him captaincy material, the biggest clue came last month when he snubbed the Indian Premier League. Brook’s utter commitment to the England cause was evident when he pulled out of a deal with Delhi Capitals worth £550,000. At that point, he was not assured of the white-ball job. Indeed, Brook’s ascendency was only confirmed on Monday. At 26 he is young.
