Against the backdrop of a number of top receivers available in the NFL draft, Sean Payton offered some love Thursday for his group. The Broncos have the No. 20 pick in the April 24-26 draft, and there has been speculation they could take a receiver. But the head coach does want to make it clear how they stand now at the position. “We drafted two receivers last year,’’ said Payton, referring to fourth-round pick Troy Franklin and seventh-round selection Devaughn Vele.

Next week’s NFL draft features plenty of depth at running back, a number of intriguing wide receivers and some impact tight ends. All of that should make the Broncos salivate as they look for pieces to help quarterback Bo Nix. Then again, coach Sean Payton stressed Thursday it’s not just about offense that can aid their second-year quarterback. “When you help your defense, you help your quarterback as well,’’ he said.

Several years ago, Ken Shelton ran into Mark Olivari, the owner of Scroungers Paradise, an eclectic furniture story in Asheville, N.C. But the conversation wasn’t about home furnishings. Brayden Bailey is known as the son of Broncos Hall of Famer Champ Bailey, but he’d like to make a tweak to that. Brayden, 15, is coming off his freshman season at Holy Innocents Esiscopal School in Atlanta. Just like his dad once did, he plays cornerback and wears No. 24. “I feel like I’m really known as Champ Bailey’s son instead of Brayden Bailey, and I would like my name to become Brayden Bailey, also the son of Champ Bailey,’’ he told The Denver Gazette.

For the past five seasons, Darren Rizzi got an up-close look at Sam Franklin. Now he will get to coach him. The safety on Friday signed a one-year deal with the Broncos. He gets a guaranteed $1.17 million, a signing bonus of $167,500, and incentives could bring the total deal to $1.5 million. Franklin, considered an ace on special teams, played the past five years for the Carolina Panthers.
