Residents of Portland, Oregon, have helped the city safely collect and recycle more than 20 tons of household batteries in the last year through a curbside program, according to the city’s Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS). The city launched the service in June 2024, gearing it toward residents living in single-family houses and “smallplexes” (2-4 units) in an effort to make recycling easier while mitigating the risk of fires at waste and recycling facilities.

Electra Battery Materials Corp., Toronto, has announced the completion of a feasibility level Class 3 engineering study for the construction of a modular battery recycling facility adjacent to its cobalt sulfate refinery north of Toronto. The Toronto-based company says the facility will be designed to recover lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese and graphite from lithium-ion battery (LIB) manufacturing scrap and end-of-life batteries using its proprietary hydrometallurgical process.

The Hawaii State Department of Health is being tasked with conducting a statewide recycling needs assessment as the state considers an extended producer responsibility (EPR) program for packaging. Gov. Josh Green recently signed House Bill 750, which takes effect July 1 and grants the department $1.5 million per year for the next two years to conduct the study, with the aim of the department presenting its findings and proposing EPR legislation by Dec. 31, 2027.
