An anti-corruption commission formed in Solomon Islands four years ago is facing scrutiny for lack of effectiveness and transparency. The independent body was supposed to allow an avenue for Solomon Islanders to bring allegations of corruption to authorities so they could investigate. But critics, some of whom have been appointed to serve as anti-corruption commissioners, say the commission has not been adequately resourced to fulfil this duty.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi discussed global security and China's presence in the Pacific with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, in what was the first visit by a Japanese foreign minister to the island state. Mr Hayashi said Japan was "watching the developments" of a security pact Solomon Islands signed with China last year, and discussed the current global security environment with Prime Minister Sogavare, according to a statement by Japan's foreign ministry.

Daniel Suidani, a fierce critic of his country's relations with China, was ousted as premier of Malaita Province this morning after 17 provincial assembly members voted to remove him.
