Somerset Community College (SCC) kicks off dual credit week by celebrating two local high schoolers who will be the first to become EMTs through the 16- week Somerset Campus program. Kylie Cole and Olivia Roberts are senior high school students at Southwestern High School in Pulaski County. Sherri Tipton, a student at Somerset Community College Laurel Campus, has been named a 2025 New Century Workforce Scholar and will receive a $1,500 scholarship. This scholarship is the first of its kind to support students at associate degree-granting institutions on a national scale as they plan to enter the workforce upon completing a degree or certificate. The program is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Somerset Community College named Lesley Osborne, a student in the Surgical Technology Program, as the Health Sciences Division’s Student of the Month for March. As a recipient of this prestigious award, Osborne is now in the running for the Division’s Student of the Year Award, which will be announced in May 2025. The SCC Surgical Technology Program prepares graduates to support surgeons in facilitating safe and effective invasive procedures.

Alicia Stigall, an instructor at Somerset Community College, has been appointed to the Kentucky Board of Cosmetology. In this role, she will help establish guidelines for the state, focusing on promoting health, equality in education, and high-quality safe care for clients. Stigall began her cosmetology journey as a student at SCC in 2012 and has been practicing as a licensed cosmetologist in the Commonwealth since completing her training.

Somerset Community College announced that Dr. Rick W. Smith, Sr., President of Dallas College North Lake, will return to SCC on Friday, February 21, 2025, at 10 a.m. Dr. Smith will deliver a compelling presentation titled “Workforce Trends and the Impact on Underserved Populations” in the Rogers Commons Community Room on the Somerset campus. Dr. Smith’s previous appearance at the SCC Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast on January 17, 2025, left a lasting impression on attendees.

A student currently enrolled in studies in the Somerset Community College (SCC) Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Program has been named the recipient of the SCC Health Sciences Division’s Student of the Month for February. Rebecca Bowlin of Monticello received the award and is now a candidate for the Division’s Student of the Year Award, to be announced in May 2025. MLTs work in clinical laboratories within hospitals, healthcare settings, or industrial settings.
