Pena was expected to return to the Orange for a fifth season. Syracuse head coach Fran Brown had previously confirmed at an event in December that Pena would be a captain and returning to the Orange for the 2025 season.

He entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 2023 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024. Freeney’s Orange football career ended with a consensus All-American honor and co-BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honors. He set Syracuse’s program single-season and single-game record in sacks with 17.5 and 4.5 respectively.

He revealed his plans for Syracuse’s offensive line with the spring game coming up on Saturday. Williams said that the likely first-string offensive line will be Trevion Mack at left tackle, Josh Miller at left guard, Mark Petry at center, Joe Cruz at right guard, and Da’Metrius Weatherspoon at right tackle.

The consensus four-star recruit has also been working with the wide receivers this spring. Brown confirmed that Samuel will also get playing time on both sides of the ball, signaling the Orange could be developing their own Travis Hunter two-way player.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported on early Thursday afternoon that Syracuse and Jeff Nixon had agreed to a new multi contract. The new deal reportedly includes a large raise for Nixon, which would put him among the highest paid coordinators in the ACC. Nixon joined the Orange with Fran Brown in 2024.
