Outbreaks of Mycoplasma pneumoniae occur every 3–7 years1The proportion of respiratory tract infections caused by M. pneumoniae ranges from 0% to 30%, depending on the year and region studied.2 During epidemic peaks, cases rise globally or regionally, typically in late summer and fall, and outbreaks can persist for months.1,3 Infection can occur at any age, but school-aged children and adolescents are primarily affected.1 In nonepidemic years, transmission rates are low.

Background The two Canadian blood suppliers, Canadian Blood Services and Héma-Québec, removed the time-based deferral for men who have sex with men and adopted criteria assessing sexual risk behaviors. We report the impact of these changes on the safety and adequacy of the Canadian blood supply. Study Design and Methods Since 2022, all donors are asked if (1) they have had a new partner and (2) more than one sexual partner in the last 3 months.
