Outbreaks of Mycoplasma pneumoniae occur every 3–7 years1The proportion of respiratory tract infections caused by M. pneumoniae ranges from 0% to 30%, depending on the year and region studied.2 During epidemic peaks, cases rise globally or regionally, typically in late summer and fall, and outbreaks can persist for months.1,3 Infection can occur at any age, but school-aged children and adolescents are primarily affected.1 In nonepidemic years, transmission rates are low.
