On Friday, though, the Unicorns did it the easy way, defeating Southwest 10-0 in a run-rule win on their home field. New Braunfels beat Southwest twice in a best-of-three area round playoff series to advance to next week's Class 5A Division I regional semifinals.

    The District 26-5A playoff baseball teams eased past their competition last week to open up the postseason. The co-district champions, New Braunfels and Boerne Champion, swept their bi-district opponents in two games in best-of-three series. New Braunfels defeated Leander Glenn by scores of 9-1 and 8-7. Boerne Champion took down Cedar Park by scores of 18-5 and 14-4. New Braunfels (25-6) now faces Southwest (21-5-1) in the area round this week in a best-of-three series.

    The San Antonio Missions split a six-game series against the Corpus Christi Hooks last week, highlighted by the momentary return of Padres All-Star and former Mission Jackson Merrill. Merrill played in two games for the Missions on Saturday and Sunday as he continued his rehab of a hamstring strain. He went 2-for-3 with one walk and one run in the Missions' 4-1 win over Corpus Christi on Saturday. The Silver Slugger winner went 0-for-3 on Sunday with one run and was hit by a pitch.
