    Smithson Valley baseball is on the verge of not only making program history, but San Antonio area history as well. The Rangers take on the Aledo Bearcats (31-8) at 7 p.m. Friday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock for the UIL Class 5A Division I state title. Smithson Valley (27-12) is the first 5A baseball team from the San Antonio area to make a state championship game since Alamo Heights accomplished the feat in the 2015-16 school year with current Houston Astros pitcher Forrest Whitley on the roster.

    Johnson senior shortstop Kayson Cunningham was selected as the 2024-25 Gatorade Texas Baseball Player of the Year. He is the first San Antonio area player to earn this award since it began in the 1985-86 school year. Cunningham, the District 27-6A MVP, hit .509 in his senior season with 27 RBIs, 23 extra-base hits and 39 runs scored. Johnson finished the season 21-13 and went to the second round of playoffs.

    The San Antonio Missions continued to play their best baseball this season last week. The Missions took four out of six games at the Arkansas Travelers last week and have now won their latest two series, going 9-3 in its last 12 games. Prior to May's series win over Wichita, San Antonio last won a series in April. "We're starting to see it come together," Missions manager Luke Montz said. San Antonio's strong week brought its overall record to 28-23.

    CORPUS CHRISTI - Smithson Valley baseball is headed to the state championship. Barbers Hill pushed Game 2 of the best-of-three Class 5A Division I state semifinals to the brink, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut Smithson Valley's three-run lead to 4-3. However, Ranger junior pitcher Jake Kirk came in for the final two outs of Friday afternoon's game at Whataburger Field to secure Smithson Valley's spot in next week's state finals at Dell Diamond.

    Four years ago, Bryce Wells went down to Corpus Christi to watch a Smithson Valley baseball team that ultimately made state. That day Smithson Valley defeated Los Fresnos in a one-game regional final playoff game that sent the Rangers into the UIL Class 6A state semifinals. "It got rain delayed so I ended up staying the night," Wells recalls of the experience that capped off his eighth grade year.
