Washington State University researcher Ananth Kalyanaraman was among a panel of top U.S. scientists Tuesday expressing concern over the impact of federal cuts to the National Science Foundation on studies that help fuel American innovation. The online news conference, led by U.S. Sens. Maria Cantwell of Washington and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, included first-hand examples of how the significant proposed NSF cuts imperil the nation’s position as a leader in scientific research and discovery.

The David G. Pollart Center for Arts and Humanities, the WSU Graduate School, and WSU Libraries have selected the 2025 Publicly Engaged Fellows cohort. Created with funding from a National Endowment for the Humanities NextGen grant, the PEF program supports students through providing mindset and skills training necessary to work equitably with community partners and then offers those students opportunities to develop an independent, funded summer project of engaged scholarship.

Kalyanaraman has served as interim director of the school for the past year. He is a professor and Boeing Centennial Chair in computer science and holds a joint appointment at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

Beekeepers whose first language is Spanish now have a knowledge resource for keeping pollinators healthy: the new Washington State University Abejas melíferas y polinizadoras website. Educators with the WSU Honey Bee and Pollinators Program recently completed a full translation of the group’s English-language website, which covers everything from pests and diseases to training opportunities and the WSU bee blog.
