Kentucky foster children enjoy Halloween shopping spree at Caufield's

Caufield's Novelty hosted a free shopping spree for about a dozen foster children in Kentucky, offering them a chance to pick out costumes and accessories. "This is a super exciting part of the work that we do. Having the kids be able to come here and go on their first shopping spree for Halloween is really awesome," said Shawnte West from the Department for Community Based Services (DCBS).

Through donations, Kentucky’s chapter of Gift of Adoption has helped connect more than 119 children with forever families. This year’s featured family includes an energetic 4-year-old, Wiatt Clark. Wiatt’s parents, Mary Beth and Carl Clark, began exploring adoption in 2018.

Tamya, 12, would love to find the right adoptive family for her and possibly her younger brother, too. “I love cooking, I’m smart, I am caring, I love to clean, and I love having friends,” she said. Tamya enjoys her friends, but her favorite person to spend time with is her younger brother. “I see him sometimes but it depends on what’s going on that particular moment,” she explained. And for Ajay, 11, the feeling is mutual.

Emma, 17, is full of emotion starting her senior year in high school."Exciting, overwhelming, and nerve-wracking," she said. Despite back-to-school nerves, Emma said she would like to graduate early. She’s eager to get a head start on independent living, college and the pursuit of a special passion."I want to major in music — vocal music. I love to sing. It’s just a natural thing, my mom says I’ve been singing since I’ve been making sounds," she said. At 17, Emma is close to aging out of foster care.

Summertime can be unpredictable for children in Kentucky foster care. But Eugene, 12, hopes to make the best of his time away from school. He’s cautiously optimistic about starting sixth grade next month, where his favorite subject is math.Eugene describes himself as a good person who can sometimes be shy. He looks forward to joining an adoptive family with lots of siblings. “Brothers and sisters — they’re really fun to play with,” he said.

Cassi, 15, is an athlete through and through, and her energy is contagious. “I play football, basketball, track, cross country, and I do boxing and kickboxing,” Cassi said. “I’m funny too, I’m very helpful, I like helping people.” Like many teens in Kentucky foster care, Cassi hasn’t had much stability over the past few years.“It’s scary because I’ve been in multiple different placements, I’m in my third residential, waiting for the right family,” Cassi said.

Dom, 16, has been in Kentucky’s foster care system since he was a toddler. After years of moving in and out of homes, he isn’t sugarcoating his experience. “It’s been awful,” said Dom. “They don’t help us, they throw us in random places, and then kick us out anyways.”Older children and teenagers can spend years languishing in the system. The older a child gets, the harder it is to match them with an adoptive home. For Dom, it can feel like the odds are stacked against him.
