Not long after Staff Sgt. Ryan O’Hara was killed in a fiery crash above the Potomac River last week, his parents said they received an offer from American Airlines to fly them over the accident site. But their pain was too raw to accept, said Gary O’Hara, his father. Besides, he and his wife, Mary, wanted to remember that route along the river, with the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument glowing in the dark, as their son had described it.

Officials on a Georgia island Sunday were investigating the collapse of a ferry dock gangway the previous day that killed seven people and left three others hospitalized. The dock was carrying people gathered for an annual celebration of a community of slave descendants. Everything is bigger in Texas, so the saying goes. It’s no wonder then that the toast that bears the state’s name has an outsize following across the United States. The name refers to both the form (a thick slice of white bread) and a style (buttery griddled bread), and it’s one of many Lone Star State foods, like chicken-fried steak, queso and chili, that have become American staples.

If you ever order sopa, or soup, in Paraguay, don’t expect to be served a steaming bowl of broth. What you’ll get instead is a dense and cheesy hunk of cornbread. This bread, also known as sopa Paraguaya, is one of the country’s most popular dishes. Cornmeal, onion, cheese, milk and eggs are mixed together to make a custardy cornbread, with a texture similar to bread pudding, that is commonly served alongside grilled meats.

For more than a century, Americans have adapted dishes with Italian roots like fettuccine Alfredo, chicken Parmesan and spaghetti with meatballs. Lasagna soup is the latest, a recipe that aims to take the work out of making the pasta casserole by mixing its components into a one-pot soup. For its current moment in the spotlight, it can thank a Lego train. Last year, a TikTok account tried to determine how many sheets of lasagna it would take to stop the toy locomotive (24, as it turns out).
