I have been thinking that one is made through events—historical, familial, known and unknown; one is made also by what one reads, by what one experiences—all this underpins how one comes to know oneself; and one is made through the action, realization, and analysis that constructs a self. One is made, too, by what Michel-Rolph Trouillot names as silence and power in the production of history.

I wrote, in 2022, how returning to an oatmeal routine for breakfast was how I was able to finish my first book. I thought, from then on, that I’d be eating oatmeal every day for the rest of my life. I figured I might as well tattoo a rolled oat on my knuckle, next to the martini: my staples. My angel and my devil. Then, in the middle of last year, I stopped wanting the oats.
