As stock markets in the United States sustained the biggest single-day drop since the start of the pandemic, locally based public companies took a substantial hit in value. Tampa Bay public companies lost a combined $7.5 billion in market cap in yesterday’s stock market drop following the Trump administration’s announcement of widespread tariffs. Raymond James Financial took the biggest hit, dropping $2.4 billion in value in one day.

Nearly 60% of local federal funding and employees are located in Hillsborough. As the federal government continues cutting funding and employees, Hillsborough County is especially exposed to both funding and employment. According to USASpending.gov, more than $66 billion in federal funding across all aspects of the government is awarded in the Tampa Bay area. Around $38 billion, or nearly 60%, of that amount was awarded to Hillsborough County recipients.
