    Ahead of Blue Monday, GRiD the industry body for the group risk sector, has released figures showing that, over the past decade, mental health conditions have been either the first or second highest cause of claim by employees on work-sponsored group income protection (GIP) policies. Accordingly, in 2023 (latest data available), 22% of GIP claims were for mental illness which was just shy of the 24% for cancer – the most claimed-for condition on GIP last year.

    RedArc, the nurse-led support organisation, warns that those who already have a history of depression and anxiety are particularly vulnerable during the winter months, and their mental health can deteriorate if support is not made available. It stresses that support must be fit for purpose for those who struggle. The darker, post-Christmas period can be tremendously difficult for many, and it’s important that this is recognised so that the most appropriate support can be made available.

    There were 30% more referrals to RedArc for bereavement support during 2023 compared to the previous year, highlighting how an increasing number of people see the benefits of seeking help following the death of a loved one. The nurse-led organisation knows that grief can be complicated, and multi-dimensional and its impact may not be felt for months or even years. It can affect every aspect of a person’s life, including work, sleep and relationships, as well as physical and mental health.

    The number of people that RedArc has supported with cancer has doubled since 2020. This includes those who are waiting for a full diagnosis through to those undergoing treatment, in remission, or living with cancer. While each of these stages may require a different approach, cancer can affect every area of a person’s life including their physical, mental, financial and social wellbeing.

    The number of children that RedArc supported across all types of conditions increased by 57% between 2020 and 2023, and mental health consistently accounted for 30% of these cases during all three years and this is set to continue. With national demand for mental health support for children and young people at an all-time high, parents are looking to access care from all sources available to them.
