    I love America Ferrara’s monologue in Barbie. Similarly, the impossibility of being a woman in medicine, as so clearly stated in Dr. Jennifer Lycette’s recent essay in KevinMD, absolutely resonates with me. And yet, let’s not forget that in 2021, two of five practicing physicians were women, with certain fields including (my own) dermatology, internal medicine, and pediatrics having a female predominance.

    My first picture book is coming out soon. I should be excited, but I feel a slight dread. I was told I had no right to write this fictional story inspired by my experiences as a hearing mother of a deaf child with bilateral cochlear implants. The protagonist of the picture book is a boy with cochlear implants, like my son. Up to the decision for cochlear implants through to today, I have always wondered what my son's experience of sound is like. Christine J. Ko pictured (L) and her son (R).

    As a child, I hardly ever read a book that had a main (or even supporting) character that was Korean American or Asian like me. To see my children reading books that showcase diversity made me realize more fully how much I wish I could have had the same experience. The inspiration for this book is my son – I wanted him to have a book with a main character with cochlear implants.
