When I was a teenager, I worked summer nights at the Funtown Amusement Park on the south side of Atlanta, Georgia. After work, as I drove home to the north side of Atlanta, I had to pass through “Cabbagetown.” In the early 1960s, during the days of segregation in the South, Cabbagetown was a shantytown neighborhood inhabited by tough, white folks who worked at the nearby Fulton Cotton Mills.

The Apple Hill Growers celebrate both crops at this month’s Lavender Blue Harvest Days on June 22 & 23 and June 29 & 30.

“Mom, when I walk in the room, all they see is a deviant Black man.”Those were the words my transgender daughter said to me after a recent visit with her primary care physician. She felt like everyone was judging her, and the doctor acted like she had a contagious disease. He was also preoccupied with her name choice and whether she would be getting a “sex change” surgery, and he didn’t once make proper eye contact. All this was during what was supposed to be a routine well-child/sports physical.
