Residents on the North Island of New Zealand are preparing for a severe storm that is expected to hit the region soon. Ex-tropical cyclone Tam is barrelling towards the upper North Island after being downgraded from a category one storm. Earlier in the week, the Fiji Meteorological Service named it “Tropical Cyclone Tam” as it hovered around Vanuatu. Metservices say the centre of Tam is expected to remain west of Cape Reinga.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Winston Peters says Fiji and New Zealand are committed to working closely to address challenges in their region. “New Zealand and Fiji have a crucial partnership in the Pacific,” Peters says after meeting with the Fijian Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, in Nadi on Tuesday. “In these uncertain times, our relationship must benefit our people and the region.” Peters addressed the media before boarding a flight to Vanuatu.
