Democratic former U.S. Rep. Wiley Nickel has raised $2.4 million this year in his quest to oust Republican U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis in the 2026 election. Last week marked the Federal Election Commission’s most recent quarterly filing deadline for the period between Jan. 1 and March 31 — the first complete period following the 2024 election in November. Nickel’s haul was a notable increase over last quarter, when he raised less than $3,000.

Budget airline Avelo will continue operating three bases in North Carolina following plans to partner with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration Customs and Enforcement agency (ICE) to offer deportation flights. Avelo announced earlier this month the airline has signed a partnership for a long-term charter program with ICE. The airline will open a base at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) in Arizona for the ICE operations beginning May 12, according to the airline.

The North Carolina House Agriculture and Environment Committee voted to approve a flurry of bills on Wednesday, touching on topics like wastewater and PFAS. Rep. Mark Brody (R-Anson, Union) introduced House Bill 376, titled “Various On-Site Wastewater & Well Provisions.” The legislation would subject drinking wells and wastewater to rules and regulations determined by the state.
