Statistical analysisSample characteristics were described using means and standard deviations (SD), medians and interquartile ranges (IQR), and frequencies. One-way ANOVAs, Kruskal–Wallis tests and χ2 tests were used to examine differences in characteristics between dementia subtypes. Moreover, we used these tests to investigate whether there were differences between the analytical sample and those excluded from the study.

MethodsWe assembled a retrospective cohort study drawn from a large volume of healthcare information. The South London and Maudsley National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust (SLaM) is one of Europe’s largest secondary mental healthcare providers.14 SLaM provides comprehensive secondary mental healthcare, including dementia assessment and management services, to an urban catchment area of approximately 1.36 million people within the London boroughs of Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham and Croydon.
