DiscussionThese findings suggest that linkage between health and education data sources can provide an opportunity to increase available ethnicity data for studies using linked and routinely collected records. In this sample, the proportion with available and usable ethnicity data rose from 79.3% (from the NPD) and 87.0% (from CRIS) to 97.3% (from either the NPD or from CRIS).

Statistical analysisSample characteristics were described using means and standard deviations (SD), medians and interquartile ranges (IQR), and frequencies. One-way ANOVAs, Kruskal–Wallis tests and χ2 tests were used to examine differences in characteristics between dementia subtypes. Moreover, we used these tests to investigate whether there were differences between the analytical sample and those excluded from the study.

MethodsWe assembled a retrospective cohort study drawn from a large volume of healthcare information. The South London and Maudsley National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust (SLaM) is one of Europe’s largest secondary mental healthcare providers.14 SLaM provides comprehensive secondary mental healthcare, including dementia assessment and management services, to an urban catchment area of approximately 1.36 million people within the London boroughs of Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham and Croydon.

The Environmental Risk (E-Risk) Longitudinal Twin Study has been backed by £2.3 million funding from the UKRI Medical Research Council to collect new follow-up data from twin participants at age 30. The E-Risk Study is co-led by Professor Helen Fisher, Professor Terrie Moffitt, Professor Avshalom Caspi, Dr Chloe Wong and Dr Jayati Das-Munshi at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience and ESRC Centre for Society and Mental Health at King’s College London.
