Shopify enables its users to create their own websites using their payment processing and templates. This allows its users to maintain their unique image rather than be part of a larger retail site. Tobias Lutke and Scott Lake launched Shopify as an open-source template called Liquid, which is what the site still runs on today. Shopify launched its POS system, which retailers could use in their brick-and-mortar stores.

As we descended into Bogotá over the hills and valleys of Boyacá on my first flight into Colombia many years ago now, I was mesmerised by the lushness and variety of the landscape’s rich greens. The farm country below looked surprisingly familiar to someone accustomed to the manoeuvring and preparation for landing in Shannon. There were no stonewalls that I could see, but, other than that, I might be landing in a hitherto unknown Irish airport.

On a whistle-stop trip to Ireland, I recently went to a Dunnes Stores mega market in Galway. I was wowed. Supermarkets in Spain can’t compete; at least, not the ones that I know. Supermarkets in Colombia? No way. To visit the in-house Sheridan’s cheese market at Dunnes in Knocknacarra was to prompt my taste buds in ways hitherto unrecognised. The fish counter on the west side of Galway with its choices in fresh cuts of salmon made me wish to have something similar where I live in Colombia.
