Waltz, a three-term member of Congress, has worked extensively on defense and foreign affairs, drawing on his prior experience as a combat veteran and as a civilian policy officialin the Pentagon and White House.

    On Oct. 8, India’s election commission announced the results of elections in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. A regional party, the National Conference, in alliance with the Indian National Congress, a national center-left party, and a handful of independents, will form the next government. This is perhaps unsurprising: A leader from one of these two parties has headed the state government for the bulk of Jammu Kashmir’s post-1947 history.

    On the morning of June 4, India will begin counting the votes that have been cast since April 19. India’s 44-day multiphase election will determine the next national government. India uses electronic voting machines so counting the hundreds of millions of votes should proceed quickly. Election officials expect to complete the vote tally by late June 4 or early on June 5.  The party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is almost certain to emerge victorious.

In advance of that enormous exercise, and to some extent because of those imminent polls, the volume of Indian political news seems extraordinary.
