Dong-Dong is a Japanese boy who does not play with others, preferring to shoot marbles and hang around with his dog, Gusuri. One day he buys some candies that turn out to be magical. One that resembles the same pattern as their couch allows it to speak with him, complaining about a nettlesome remote control stuck in its cushions and his father’s flatulence.

It wears the clothes of a historical prestige drama, the sort of thing that gets nominated for awards — and indeed, just last week the Dutch film was a surprise nominee in the Academy Awards for best international feature.

Everything edgy eventually becomes conventional, whether it’s music, politics or movies. The early Aardman Animations efforts were quirky, puckish stop-motion animation with a distinctly British lilt. They’ve reached the point where they’re cinematic comfort food, familiar slices of homespun confection made to delight audiences from age 3 to 103.

If you’re looking to be swaddled in sweet, wholesome Christmas storytelling for the whole family, you could do worse than “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.” It’s not quite naughty enough for any truly edgy humor a la “A Christmas Story” — the best mix of sentimentality and sarcasm, in my book — thought it tries not to seem too nice.

If you’re a fan of Alfred Hitchcock, you’ve simply got to see the new film portrait, “My Name is Alfred Hitchcock.” If you’re not a fan of Hitch, you will be after watching it. Written and directed by Mark Cousins, it’s purportedly narrated by Hitchcock himself — which would be pretty impressive, considering he died 44 years ago.

It’s not often movies come out that are seemingly made with exactly you in mind.
