The Cabarrus County Republican Party Executive Committee is busy preparing to select a recommended candidate to replace N.C. Sen. Paul Newton. Newton, who was the Senate Majority Leader and represented the 34th District, announced on Tuesday that he was retiring from the North Carolina Senate, effective at 7 p.m. Wednesday. He is retiring "to pursue an opportunity outside of state government," according to a press release.

Kelly Schroeder is a 25-year veteran with the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office. She has been a K-9 handler for the past 12 years. But what this deputy enjoys most about her job is volunteering and supporting Cabarrus County Special Olympics, including the annual Spring and Fall games, where athletes across the county compete against each other. The Spring games this year will be held on April 9 and 10 at the Cabarrus Arena & Events Center, where around 400 athletes will be competing.

Downs, who had served as county manager since 2011, has not yet been paid his gross severance and bonus sums, which amounts to $464,843.40. He is also owed a 5% contribution "above and beyond his salary" to his 401(k) account.
