The Cabarrus County Republican Party Executive Committee is busy preparing to select a recommended candidate to replace N.C. Sen. Paul Newton. Newton, who was the Senate Majority Leader and represented the 34th District, announced on Tuesday that he was retiring from the North Carolina Senate, effective at 7 p.m. Wednesday. He is retiring "to pursue an opportunity outside of state government," according to a press release.

After more than a year of being closed, James L. Dorton Park officially re(opened) for business Tuesday. The park, which closed in September 2023, underwent numerous renovations as part of the $60 million bond that voters approved in November 2022.
