    Since I became a mom, I feel like I always have one ear open or eye out searching for other women whose emotions are intricately wrapped in their motherhood experience—the ones consumed with complex feelings from overwheming pride to gutting nostalgia. I knew I had found one of those women when I came across one of Rachel Beachy’s poems in my friend’s Instagram feed; Rachel wrote with curiosity, tenderness, awe. Each poem I read of hers seemed to resonate more than the last.

    While I was living in New York in my twenties, my niece was dancing. Jazz, tap, contemporary—she did it all. She went on to dance through high school, eventually accepted at UCLA in their dance program a few years ago. Sometimes I’d be lucky enough to be back in my hometown to attend her performances, trying my best not to miss her end-of-year showcase. My sisters and I would whisper in the dark theater, “she’s up next!” and then cheer for her just as she was about to take the stage.

    If you are a mom, or are celebrating a mom in your life, I just want to wish you a happy Mother’s Day. If you’ve lost your mom, or have a complicated relationship with your mom, or are wishing to become a mom, I hope you find some space to feel whatever it is you need to feel, and to be kind to yourself this weekend. Holidays can feel so fraught, especially as we get older—more time for new wounds to imprint themselves on once-treasured days.

    Chase turned six today. Six! When I told him that this year was his golden birthday—six on May 6th—he was instantly enchanted. A golden birthday! He told everyone in the months leading up to today that he was about to be six, and that it would be his golden birthday. I imagined sparklers being lit inside his brain, confetti raining from the sky. The sun would shine just for him: it would rise in the color of honey, and set in shades of pyrite and amber.
