    Chase turned six today. Six! When I told him that this year was his golden birthday—six on May 6th—he was instantly enchanted. A golden birthday! He told everyone in the months leading up to today that he was about to be six, and that it would be his golden birthday. I imagined sparklers being lit inside his brain, confetti raining from the sky. The sun would shine just for him: it would rise in the color of honey, and set in shades of pyrite and amber.

    After I got Chase off to school today and was back home with Emma, I checked my email on my phone, charging near the kitchen table. I opened a message from Chase’s elementary school with the subject line “Vandalization in Garden.” I figured an angsty teenager had tagged a flower bed with something illegible or innocuous. Instead, I saw this:My eyes began to well. I was so confused; I looked closer to read the words written on the flags.

    My sisters and I always joke about how our mom is a “good enough” mom—when we were growing up, she didn’t often plan picture-perfect birthday parties or do elaborate crafts with us; she mostly dressed us in whatever clothes fit and we ate baked potatoes with cheese and sour cream at least once a week.
