After I got Chase off to school today and was back home with Emma, I checked my email on my phone, charging near the kitchen table. I opened a message from Chase’s elementary school with the subject line “Vandalization in Garden.” I figured an angsty teenager had tagged a flower bed with something illegible or innocuous. Instead, I saw this:My eyes began to well. I was so confused; I looked closer to read the words written on the flags.

My sisters and I always joke about how our mom is a “good enough” mom—when we were growing up, she didn’t often plan picture-perfect birthday parties or do elaborate crafts with us; she mostly dressed us in whatever clothes fit and we ate baked potatoes with cheese and sour cream at least once a week.

This always makes me feel like I’m exceptionally cool (I’m not) for knowing my exceptionally cool friend (who, besides having this enviable publishing clout is also whip smart, thoughtful, tender and tough at once, and an exceptional friendship-keeper).

Last week I went through some old notes on my phone. I found few random email addresses from new acquaintances, a measurement for a piece of furniture, some grocery lists and recipes. One note annotated Chase’s fever over the course of several days, a voyeuristic glimpse into the anxious mind of a new mother. Many notes were labeled “Thoughts”—stream-of-conscious missives that contained scattered ideas, quotes, poems.

We’re three weeks into summer over here and I am tired. Open-ended days with little kids are decidedly a lot. We’ve done playdates, the beach, a trip into San Francisco, the Children’s Museum, endless parks, neighborhood walks, lots of water play and we’re only on day 17. HOW. Thankfully, they’ve got camp next week and my oldest starts kindergarten at his year-round school shortly after that.

Oof. A long summer with the kids and a busy start to the school year pulled me away from this newsletter more than I had anticipated. Grateful for the fall season and its fresh start. Thank you for continuing to support my writing, and for being here. I appreciate you. Upon turning 40 at the end of last year, I did the thing every woman with a milestone birthday does: I declared the new decade a fresh start, a renewal of sorts.

We didn’t decide so much to not have a third baby as we did to not decide to have a third baby; the possibility lingered but we never took hold of it, gathering dust in the corner, wilting and unattended. The transition from one baby to two was a harder leap for us than zero to one: the juggling of two stages of childhood simultaneously, double the sleep battles to fight, the increasing difficulty of carving out solo time for ourselves while we were dividing and conquering.
