Bischoff is flying over from Germany after finding his “tribe of lovable, excitable anglophone weirdos” at Glasgow’s Worldcon. Here, he tells us why it’s worth the hassle. This year’s Worldcon in Glasgow was pretty much my first fan convention experience. Well, that’s not entirely true. I’ve been to GamesCon, but that’s more of a giant consumerism jerk-off than a fan event.

Book ReviewPauline MorganOne of the problems with having a proof copy of a book to review is that it is difficult to appreciate the finished product. Having seen it, I know that the special edition hardcover is a beautiful book and a worthy addition to any bookshelf. Sometimes, the packaging is better than the contents. Fortunately, the story between the covers is deserving of the presentation.

Book ReviewT NagarajanRead the summary of Ordinary Monsters, and you may feel that this is the same story we have seen on the silver screen or read in many other books. However, I urge you not to judge the book by its blurb. I initially picked up this monster of a book because the story promised to be familiar – after a lengthy hiatus from reading (and sticking mainly to audiobooks), I resolved to get back into reading hard copies. Ordinary Monsters was not what I expected at all.

Liam Hogan attended the first Fantasy & Sci-Fi Spotlight at Shrewsbury’s Nerdy Cafe and lived to tell – and write about – the tale. The Nerdy Cafe, wearing the previous day’s Shrewsbury Pride colours, hosted a Fantasy & Sci-Fi Spotlight on 29 September, a day-long event dedicated to genre fiction for “avid readers and aspiring writers”.

I can’t say I’ve read any of Chuck Tingle’s prolific oeuvre of titles like Space Raptor Butt Invasionor Pounded in the Butt by My Handsome Sentient Library Card, but my first entry into the Tingleverse confirmed what the jacket copy and author biography offered: Tingle is a writer and person who leads with love. Bury Your Gays, his sophomore queer horror novel from Tor Nightfire, is testament to the author’s compassionate ethos.

While most eyes are on the bigger Oscar awards, Misha Byrne is thrilled, and humbled, to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Short Film. His piece, Little Mouse, is a thoughtful and enigmatic tale and a far cry from the type of work that pays his bills: writing queer horror for television and film. Misha’s scripts aren’t considered highbrow, but his studio (Harold Brothers Studios) and the studio head (Jack Mays) has always had his back and allowed him creative freedom. That is, until now.

Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle2024’s Bury Your Gays didn’t grab me the way Camp Damascus did, but it definitely pulled me in. It’s a different brand of horror that worked convincingly, and I did love Misha, the main character, a Hollywood writer who is the name in queer horror. Tingle creates a world where what happens in the boardroom is every bit as creepy and terrifying as what happens in a dark alley or deserted city park. As the story opens, Misha is on top of the world, or should be.
