March 3 marked one year since my father passed away. As I reflect on his journey, I realize how much his retirement contributed to the worsening of his Parkinson’s symptoms. In hindsight, I see that while retirement should have been a time of relaxation, it played an unexpected and significant role in his decline. Before retiring, my father was always active. His career as a teacher, combined with managing multiple businesses, kept him constantly engaged both physically and mentally.

As a caregiver to a husband with Parkinson’s disease, I often feel like we’re in an unseaworthy boat surrounded by sharks, searching for a lighthouse. Back in September 2013, I was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s disease at the age of 36. What no one told us is that my husband was also being diagnosed — with early-onset caregiving. It’s not a role either of us asked for, but I’m so thankful he’s been there for me. I’ve never really liked the word “caregiver” in reference to a spouse. It sounds so clinical.

It’s been such a warm fall season here in Ohio that it’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is quickly approaching. Not only do we celebrate Thanksgiving in November, but it’s also National Family Caregivers Month, a time to honor the caregivers in our lives. Caregiver Action Network began advocating for this month of recognition in 1994, and in 1997, President Bill Clinton signed the first National Family Caregivers Month presidential proclamation.
