Caregiving for a loved one is one of the most challenging, demanding, and often frustrating jobs that I can think of. My husband, Eric, and I never anticipated that I’d be his caregiver, but Parkinson’s disease changed our reality. I’ve learned that caring for someone is one of the purest acts of love you can do. As I reflect on what we’ve been through since his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2014, I realize that I’ve learned several lessons from caregiving that I’d like to share with you.

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month and, in the U.S. and across the globe this year, patients, caregivers, medical professionals, and advocates will be focusing their attention on helping to empower those living with the neurological disease by providing educational resources, fostering community, and providing opportunities to get involved. A rare nerve disorder may offer clues to potential Parkinson’s disease treatment targets, a mouse study showed. In giant axonal neuropathy (GAN), buildup of neurofilament proteins trap several cellular organelles and proteins, preventing nerve cells from clearing and recycling waste, the study found. Because neurofilament proteins have also been linked to several neurodegenerative disorders, the findings may be relevant to Parkinson’s, the researchers said.

As a caregiver to a husband with Parkinson’s disease, I often feel like we’re in an unseaworthy boat surrounded by sharks, searching for a lighthouse. So far, nearly 11 years after my husband Eric’s Parkinson’s diagnosis, we’ve been able to ride the waves of the disease’s progression. But nothing is ever smooth, and our sea legs remain firmly planted on the deck of our boat. We’ve managed to find a flotilla of others who are also living with Parkinson’s, and together, we navigate the challenges.

The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) has announced that it will host its third annual, free, virtual conference for people with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers on Feb. 19-20. The program is scheduled to run from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET each day.
