Zenobē (a UK EV fleet and battery storage provider) and the City of Brampton will essentially lead a group of commercial partners (including vehicle OEMs) from the UK and Canada through the first phase of a planned 10-year electrification initiative. Brampton is Greater Toronto’s largest suburb and the new electric fleet is expected to support existing routes and a passenger base of around 40 million annual people.

The takeover follows a challenging year for Pod Point, which said it faced a “difficult market backdrop” at the start of year. The firm, which operates more than 250,000 charge points across the UK, said it had struggled to make a profit in the face of disappointing EV adoption rates and an increase in competition.

Each company in the partnership currently operates its own Plug & Charge network of varying sizes. In practice, what this means is they work with charge point operators (CPOs) and eMobility Service Providers (EMPs) to integrate streamlined charging into their charging networks in line with the ISO 15118.02 standard. The end result: EV drivers can plug their vehicles in, start charging immediately, and get billed automatically when they’re done without needing a payment card or RFID key.

The UK’s Future of Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, has said that more than 100,000 charge points are being installed using government funding from the £381m Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund. She said that these are all geared towards overnight charging for drivers who lack their own off-street parking, meaning the majority of them will be AC charging only.

The funds will go towards more than doubling the brand’s current fleet of electric vans as well as installing charging infrastructure to support their deployment. The company states that by September this year, 21 of its stores will have fully electric home delivery fleets as a result – with these vehicles expected to make more than 1 million deliveries over the subsequent year. There’s no word exactly on which electric vans will be purchased yet.
