I drive faster than I should, and I have lots of company. When I stick to the old usually safe (from tickets) nine miles over the speed limit, I get passed like I’m driving nine miles under. When I allow myself to keep up with the surrounding traffic, there’s always someone who speeds past all of us like he’s got his own express lane and we’re idling in I-26 traffic out of Charleston at 5 p.m. on a Friday.

Happy Easter. On this day, Christians the world over celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, and with it our invitation to eternal life. Tomorrow, we return to the work Jesus commanded us to do: Love and serve the least of these our brothers and sisters. It’s easy to forget this central calling for Christians, what with how pervasive politics has become and how proficient politicians have become at twisting the Gospel to suit their political goals.

The last time S.C. budget earmarks went away, there was no big announcement. Just a recession, which necessitated painful mid-year budget cuts and left lawmakers with no pile of one-time money to fund the special pork projects that the Legislature had grown proficient at masquerading in order to evade then-Gov. Mark Sanford’s veto pen. Wednesday’s initial announcement that the Legislature is deliberately ending earmarks was intended to be dramatic. It just didn’t quite come off that way.

Is a sales tax really a tax? And how many people's taxes can you raise and still say you're cutting taxes? https://t.co/ZlKLOoDwuU

I awoke Monday to news that the Highway Patrol had just graduated a class of 20 new troopers. That sounded like good news until I heard the next part: bringing the total to 788. And I was startled. https://t.co/36N5t4nU4V
