    Cape Coral Police Chief Anthony Sizemore has responded to controversy over how two Southwest Florida men were charged for threats against a school, and he is vowing to fight for a change in state law. The men were charged in connection to a threat to carry out a school shooting on April 17 at Diplomat Elementary in Cape Coral. Karim Hussain, 23, made the threat, which was recorded by Mario Garth, 24, and posted to Snapchat, Cape police alleged in an April 18 Facebook post.

    The Florida Highway Patrol homicide unit continues to investigate a deadly crash involving three young adults on Interstate 75 in Lee County during the afternoon of April 18. A 24-year-old Lehigh Acres man was killed in the wreck, in which he was ejected from his car and hit by another. Two North Fort Myers men – the driver, 21, and passenger, 23, of the other car involved –suffered minor injuries. Both cars were in the left lane of 1-75 near mile marker 131 at Daniels Parkay.

    The Fort Myers Fire Department responded Tuesday night to reports of a fire at Fort Myers High School. Neighbors of the school at 2635 Cortez Blvd. reported a fire with visible flames coming from the gym roof, the fire department reported on its Facebook page. The post said: "As soon as crews arrived, they launched aggressive ladder operations.... "Within minutes, the fire was extinguished with multiple fire extinguishers from the roof.

    After an active 2024 hurricane season, Southwest Floridians were relieved when it ended and dry season set in. It hasn't rained much for a while in the Naples area. That's expected to change Monday. Prepare for some waves of rain in Naples and Collier County. The National Weather Service predicts showers before 10 a.m., with showers continuing and thunderstorms possible after 10. "Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall," NWS said on its website.
