After years of resident complaints and speculation, a newly released joint study by the City of Mount Dora and Lake County has identified the likely source of a persistent foul odor affecting parts of the city. The investigation points to the Mid Florida Materials landfill, located along State Road 46, as the primary contributor of the smell. The landfill, which accepts construction and demolition debris, was found to emit hydrogen sulfide—a gas associated with a strong “rotten egg” odor.

Army Staff Sergeant Juan “Alejo” Amaris, a double amputee and combat-wounded veteran, will be honored on Saturday, May 17 as the 2025 recipient of a custom-adapted motorcycle through VetFest Lake County’s Harleys for Heroes Ride. A retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant, Amaris served 10 years and completed two tours in Iraq between 2003 and 2006. On July 20, 2006, while stationed in Mosul, Iraq, he was severely injured by an explosion during his second deployment.
