It may be a little-heard-of election, but the candidates on the May 3 ballot will shape education in the region for years to come as school districts face budget deficits that have led to layoffs, school closures and program cuts. The uniform election in El Paso this year features trustee races in the El Paso and Socorro independent school districts, as well as El Paso Community College. Two smaller school districts – San Elizario and Anthony – also have trustee races in this election.

Wilson Alexander Juárez Hernández died twice – his heart stopping for about five minutes in an ambulance and later for eight minutes in a hospital emergency room. He was brought back to life each time. He sometimes questions if he’d be better off dead. The past two years, he’s had to relearn how to eat, walk and talk. His arms and legs don’t work like they used to. His speech is strained and slurred, every breath between words a battle.

The El Paso educator and entrepreneur, along with his brother, John Lara, paid $10,132 – including taxes and other fees – for the three-engine gutted airliner that has sat idle at El Paso International Airport for about 20 years.
