1 INTRODUCTION Ethylene oxide (EO) is a chemical widely used in the production of other chemicals, in the sterilization industry, and in the preparation of spices. EO is characterized by the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) as “carcinogenic to humans” (EPA IRIS, 2016, p. 1). Thus, deriving an adequately protective cancer risk value is of importance to protecting workers and the general population.
