Like many other longtime Southwest Siders, I grew up frequenting Marquette Park in Chicago Lawn to gather with family, feed the ducks, or check out the former rose garden. As the COVID-19 pandemic rages on, the park continues to serve as a reliable space for me to gather safely with friends.

Brighton Park Poets is a free, bilingual (Spanish-English) poetry workshop series. The group meets every first Sunday of the month, often at the Brighton Park Library. Paige Savarese, twenty-six, began Brighton Park Poets in her apartment last July. Savarese grew up in Edison Park and moved around the Northwest and West Sides before settling down in Brighton Park three years ago. Savareseâs own experiences with poetry groups motivated her to start her own.

As the city begins to carry out its sixty-day limit policy on migrant shelter stays, shelter residents across the city report confusion about the eviction process and worsening hurdles to finding more permanent housing. At Woodlawn’s Wadsworth migrant shelter, 6420 S. University Ave., one resident, whose name in this article has been changed to Luis to protect his identity, was given an eviction date of April 13.
