What is already known? BMI is an inexpensive and easy-to-use tool to assess body weight scaled by height. The use of a BMI cut point of 30 kg/m2 to define obesity in all adults does not reflect our current understanding of changes in body weight that occur with the aging process or sex differences in adiposity. Older adults experience many physical changes in late life, but these are not considered when using standard BMI categories to assess obesity. What does this study add?
