(Bloomberg) -- Credit Agricole SA Chief Executive Officer Philippe Brassac saw revenue rise to a record in his final quarter at the helm of the French lender, but higher-than-expected costs and a French tax bill weighed on profit. The shares fell as operating expenses rose 8.8% from a year earlier, leaving net income down 4.2%. Integration costs and investments in business lines helped drive up expenses, while a new corporate tax eroded the bottom line further.

(Bloomberg) -- Societe Generale SA beat analysts’ estimates for profit and revenue in the first quarter as it benefited from a surge in equities trading and booked a gain on disposals. Net income more than doubled from a year earlier, to €1.61 billion ($1.83 billion), helped by record revenue from trading stocks and related securities, the French lender said in a statement on Wednesday. Asset disposals contributed a gain of €202 million to the bottom line.

The European Union should follow the UK in cutting disclosure requirements on short sellers, an industry lobby organization said. Current rules in the EU require that the identities of investors holding short positions of 0.5% or more in a company are disclosed. That allows other market participants to copy their investment strategy on the cheap, said Rob Hailey, Europe head of the Managed Funds Association.
