Former archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said he forgives serial abuser John Smyth as he repeated an apology to victims and told of the “deep sense of personal failure” he feels about the handling of allegations. The former most senior bishop in the Church of England, who resigned in November and stepped down officially in January, said he had “not really thought it through enough, to be honest” when he initially declined to quit last year.

The Tories are amplifying the “noise and conspiracy theories” of foreign billionaires, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has said. Ms Nandy heard that attempts to “throw off public discourse do not have Britain’s best interests at heart”, and was asked if the Government is “taking the threat of foreign disinformation seriously”. In recent weeks tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has used his social media platform X to wage an online campaign against the Government over the issue of grooming gangs.

Billionaire Elon Musk has used social media to “undermine” the UK general election and tried to “depose” Sir Keir Starmer, MPs have heard. Labour MP Johanna Baxter also accused the owner of X, formerly Twitter, of putting the safety of UK Home Office minister Jess Phillips “at risk” as she called on the British government to prevent “foreign interference” in British politics.

An MP has urged the Government to confirm the “principle of self determination” for British overseas territories on the eve of Margaret Thatcher Day on the Falklands islands. Andrew Rosindell, Conservative MP for Romford, linked the holiday to the Government’s deal to relinquish sovereignty of the Chagos Islands. Commons Leader Lucy Powell said she “perhaps won’t celebrate Margaret Thatcher Day” and highlighted that negotiations over the island began under the previous Conservative government.
