A student who was told he may never walk again after becoming paralysed says he has a different perspective on life as he prepares to run the London Marathon. Tommy Rowlinson became paralysed from the chest down aged 19 after being diagnosed with Acute Transverse Myelitis in 2022, a condition caused by inflammation of the spinal cord.

A Sussex teenager who had a quadruple amputation after contracting sepsis is preparing to stand again as he tries on his first prosthetic limb. Hamish Wilson, 18, from Crowborough, had just begun university in Southampton when he fell ill in October. He called his mother one day to say his limbs were aching and he was struggling to breathe, and by the time she had driven down the next day, Hamish had been intubated.

When Donald Trump returns to the White House as US president in January, he could find himself behind a desk made in Kent. The Resolute desk is one of six that presidents have the choice of. It was made at Chatham Dockyard from the Timbers of HMS Resolute, a Victorian ship that played a key role in the history of polar explanation. It was part of the expedition sent in 1852 to find Sir John Franklin, who vanished while trying to find the North West Passage.

A centenarian couple have celebrated their 81st wedding anniversary. Dorothy Walter, 103, and Tim Walter, 102, met as 18-year-olds in Southampton during World War Two, when they were making planes in a factory. The couple, who now live together in a care home in Wingham, Kent, married when they were 21. They said the secret to a long and successful marriage was the fact they "never argue".
