Clinicians will seek to formulate safe patient management plans for ward patients following MET review based on a range of organisational, human, team and patient factors. Early warning scores and other multiparameter clinical models used to escalate deterioration may be unsuitable or too complex to flag ongoing patient risk for adverse outcomes.

3.4 Data collection The primary method of data collection was via the structured review of patient-level electronic clinical records. For each patient the study instruments were applied to produce a summary SOFA score and NAS, identify the number of organ systems in failure/dysfunction and identify the prevalence and level of complexity of clinical interventions provided the patient.
