Looking up to 'Bud'Over the speakers at CHI Health Center in Omaha, the state boys wrestling crowd heard during Wilber-Clatonia’s Zaiyahn Ornelas match that one of his favorite things outside of wrestling is boxing. Ornelas’ favorite boxer is none other than Omaha’s own Terence Crawford. “I look up to Crawford,” Ornelas said. “He’s always bettering kids and helping them out. He’s a good role model to me. I like looking up to him when I go up to the gym.

OMAHA — Waverly’s Brayden Canoyer signed with North Dakota State wrestling earlier this year, carrying on the family legacy of competing in college. Both of Brayden's brothers, Kaleb and Evan, wrestled in college and so did their father, Brad, who wrestled at Nebraska from 1995-'98. And while Brayden Canoyer is looking forward to the next level, he made sure to enjoy his final high school season, too.

OMAHA — After winning the Class A 175-pound title last year, Lincoln Pius X’s Joe Andreasen called his shot. "I’m coming back for another one next year," he said. On Saturday, he lived up to his word, defeating Sidney’s Patrick McCartney in a 6-3 decision for the Class B 190-pound title. “I accomplished my goal,” Andreasen said. “I didn’t have my partner this year, so other guys helped me out to get that goal.”His old sparring partner, Sam Andres, finished third last season at 190 pounds.

The Heartland Athletic Conference will crown two new basketball champions on Saturday at North Star High School. First, North Star and Lincoln Southwest will play for the girls crown at 3 p.m. Afterward, it's the Gator boys against Lincoln Northeast. But, before the ball goes in the air Saturday, let's turn back the clock.
