OMAHA — Waverly’s Brayden Canoyer signed with North Dakota State wrestling earlier this year, carrying on the family legacy of competing in college. Both of Brayden's brothers, Kaleb and Evan, wrestled in college and so did their father, Brad, who wrestled at Nebraska from 1995-'98. And while Brayden Canoyer is looking forward to the next level, he made sure to enjoy his final high school season, too.

OMAHA — After winning the Class A 175-pound title last year, Lincoln Pius X’s Joe Andreasen called his shot. "I’m coming back for another one next year," he said. On Saturday, he lived up to his word, defeating Sidney’s Patrick McCartney in a 6-3 decision for the Class B 190-pound title. “I accomplished my goal,” Andreasen said. “I didn’t have my partner this year, so other guys helped me out to get that goal.”His old sparring partner, Sam Andres, finished third last season at 190 pounds.

The Heartland Athletic Conference will crown two new basketball champions on Saturday at North Star High School. First, North Star and Lincoln Southwest will play for the girls crown at 3 p.m. Afterward, it's the Gator boys against Lincoln Northeast. But, before the ball goes in the air Saturday, let's turn back the clock. South Sioux City running back Tony Palmer is known across the state as one of the best backs in Class A. Palmer, who displayed elusive speed and the willingness to bulldoze over safeties on Friday at Beecher Athletic Complex, already had 957 yards on the ground this season coming into the game. With another 304 yards on the ground on 25 carries, Palmer led South Sioux City to a 42-22 win over Lincoln Northeast.

The Lincoln Northeast football team hasn’t won a game in the first two years under coach Jovanta Boyd, and the program's losing streak is up to 24 games. But that doesn’t change his message to the team: "Act like a champion."“They’re more together this year, and they have been all summer, and that’s the biggest improvement,” Boyd said earlier this week at practice.

In their first meeting of the legion season, Carpet Land and Strasburger Orthopaedics played a nail-biter, with the Rugs winning on an Owen Laessig walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Mason Gaines. Heroics weren’t needed this time, as Carpet Land won 4-1 over Strasburger Orthopaedics in the A-5 area tournament on Saturday at Den Hartog Field to advance in the winners bracket. “Chase (Nelson) was exceptional,” Carpet Land coach Mychal Lanik said.

OMAHA — With both Lincoln Christian and Adams Central making their first state baseball appearance, they both were naturally shaky to start Monday night’s game at Tal Anderson Field. The two combined for five errors in the first two innings but were playing evenly, tied at 5-all. However, it ended up being a game of runs, and Lincoln Christian clawed all the way back to win 10-9. “The first inning, they jumped on us and scored two runs,” Lincoln Christian coach Jason Bingham said.

OMAHA — No. 3-seeded Lincoln Christian advanced in the winners' bracket Monday night, defeating No. 7 Adams Central 10-9 at Omaha’s Tal Anderson Field. Both teams are making their first-ever state baseball appearance, and it showed early. The teams combined for five errors in the two innings, leading to a 5-5 score. Adams Central added one in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 9-5 lead. Lincoln Christian answered on the bottom side of the inning, tacking on another run.

OMAHA — No. 1-seeded Malcolm kept humming along Monday at Omaha’s Tal Anderson Field, defeating No. 4 Central City/Centura 7-0. After a cold couple of innings to start by both teams, Malcolm took advantage of a Kernel error in the top of the third. Central City/Centura had a chance to close out the inning with two outs already on the board, but the Clippers instead ended up bringing two home on a Logan McGreer hard ground ball up the middle.
