The Marine Corps veteran revolutionized package delivery MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Fred Smith, the FedEx Corp. founder who revolutionized the express delivery industry, has died, the company said. He was 80. FedEx started operating in 1973, delivering small parcels and documents more quickly than the Postal Service. Over the next half-century, Smith, a Marine Corps veteran, oversaw the growth of a company that became something of an economic bellwether because so many other companies rely on it.

NEW YORK – Actor Michelle Trachtenberg died as a result of complications from diabetes, New York City's medical examiner said Wednesday. The office said in a statement that it amended the cause and manner of death for the 39-year-old New York City native following a review of laboratory test results. Trachtenberg, who was known for “Gossip Girl,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Harriet the Spy,” was found unconscious and unresponsive in her luxury apartment tower in Manhattan in February.

WASHINGTON – Top congressional Democrats are protesting the reported firing of Gen. Tim Haugh as director of the National Security Agency, with one lawmaker saying the decision “makes all of us less safe.” The Washington Post reported late Thursday that Haugh and his civilian deputy at the NSA, Wendy Noble, had been dismissed from those roles. NEW YORK – Former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker has testified at Donald Trump’s hush money trial in New York that he believes Trump was aware of a contract with Karen McDougal as she sought to sell her story about claims of an affair. Pecker said Thursday that “I believe that Donald Trump did” know about it. McDougal’s contract gave the owner of the Enquirer exclusive rights to her story on any relationship with a married man. Pecker says that clause was specifically about Trump.
