MAYVILLE – Eleven games into their season, clinching the Region 2 championship may have seemed like a long shot for head coach Keenan Konschak and the MayPort-CG Patriots. Filled with a handful of first-time starters, last year’s defending region champs opened the season 2-9 after playing a brutal schedule packed with Class A squads and ranked Class B opponents. But Konschak never stopped believing in his young, talented and sometimes error-prone squad.

MAYVILLE – Members of the Mayville City Council have zeroed in on a candidate to replace former City Council member Bill Bohnsack, who passed away at age 78 on May 1. Mayor Karl Jorgenson recently extended an invitation to longtime resident Wendy Mehus to fill Bohnsack’s unexpired term on the city council, according to City Auditor Gail Olstad.

Swimmers should be able to take a plunge in public pools across Traill County in the next two to three weeks. City officials in Hillsboro, Hatton and Mayville reported this week that their municipal pools are on the verge of making their summer debuts – although none has a firm opening date. Casey Eggermont, Hillsboro’s city auditor, said city leaders expect the Woodland Park pool to open prior to the city’s Hillsboro Days celebration, which kicks off June 17.

Nine candidates submitted job applications seeking to become the next principal at Hillsboro High School, school officials announced Wednesday. Hillsboro Public Schools Superintendent Jon Dryburgh said the applicant list featured candidates from Minnesota, Montana and North Dakota – and included a current member of the Hillsboro School Board.

Dave Schill’s stint in education nearly ended after one year, so the longtime Hillsboro High School counselor may be as surprised as anyone by the length of his professional career. After 37 years in education – the past 31 spent as a school counselor in Hillsboro – Schill stepped down and shuffled into retirement at the end of the 2024-25 school year. Growing up, the 61-year-old Lakota, N.D. native always planned on working in a school one day.
