Still searching for their first win after an 0-2 debut, the Patriots got out to a rocky start Tuesday night and trailed Class A Devils Lake 13-0 midway through the third inning.
Comets golf teams open season with meet in SD

Mayville State men’s and women’s golf teams opened their 2025 spring season in a two-day invite hosted by Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D.The spring opening tournament was at the par-72 Lakeview Golf Course. “This will be our first real rounds outside since fall. The goal for this meet is to start sharpening up our short game,” Comets coach John Murphy said. The men’s team finished fifth out of eight in the field with a combined 44-over par.
Mayville State heads south to Nebraska for 4-game series

Mayville State baseball split a pair of North Star Athletic Association doubleheaders against Jamestown in games played April 6-7 in Sioux Falls, S.D.In Sunday’s games, head coach Billy Tomblin and the Comets (11-19 overall, 3-5 NSAA) won 5-3 in the first game but the Jimmies took the second game 19-7. On Monday, MSU again took the opener 4-2 and Jamestown won the second game 12-2. The Jimmies are receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Baseball Poll.

GRAND FORKS – MayPort-CG sophomore Nora Braaten had a pair of top-five finishes at the Red River Valley Conference Indoor meet at the University of North Dakota April 4. The sprinter finished second in the 60-meter dash last Friday, crossing the line in 8.38 seconds, a personal best for the young runner. She joined sophomores Zoey Mehus, Ella Flaten and senior Kayla Knudsvig as part of the girls 4x300-meter relay, which took third at the meet in a time of 3:11.12.
Comets softball team swept on the road facing Dickinson State

In a weekend series originally scheduled for its home field, Mayville State softball traveled to Dickinson State April 5-6 to continue North Star Athletic Association play. The Comets (6-27 overall, 0-8 NSAA) were swept 5-0 and 16-4 in their Saturday games and 10-1 and 7-0 in the Sunday games. “When you leave 24 runners on base over the weekend, strike out 33 times and give up 38 runs, you’re not going to win ball games,” Comets coach Jordan Olson said.
School board candidates file ahead of June election

Several incumbents and a small slate of newcomers will be appearing on ballots in the Hillsboro, Central Valley and MayPort-CG school board elections coming up in June. Hillsboro School Board President Tim Kozojed didn’t submit election paperwork prior to Monday’s filing deadline after deciding to step down following a 12-year run on the board. “It’s been 12 years and I thought that was plenty long,” Kozojed said Tuesday.

Residents living in Hillsboro’s mobile home court may receive individual water bills from the city in the future. The Hillsboro City Commission on Monday heard from Jimmy Johnson, a potential new owner of the mobile home park in Hillsboro. Johnson, a Florida resident, owns 13 mobile home facilities in Minnesota, including in New Ulm and Mankato, and has around another dozen properties across the country.
Wahpeton construction company submits lowest bid to repair city dam in Mayville

MAYVILLE – A general contractor from Wahpeton, N.D., turned in the lowest bid among seven construction companies vying to replace the dam along the Goose River in Mayville. Less than a week after a bid opening for the project, the Mayville City Council on Monday reviewed the latest financial estimates to replace the 1935 city dam that had ruptured in spring 2022.
City of Mayville gives green light to selling stop lights

MAYVILLE – City leaders in Mayville have given a green light to selling the city’s old traffic lights. The Mayville City Council on Monday night reviewed a potential list of vehicles and other equipment that they expect to sell through an online auction this spring. The list included items commonly found on a city surplus auction such as riding and push mowers, chop saws, a cutting torch and a pressure washer.
TCHS planning Traill’s 150th birthday

The Traill County Historical Society is gearing up for the 150th birthday celebration of Traill County. John Wright, president of the TCHS board, said a number of activities are planned for the event in June. A special edition of the Hillsboro Banner is planned for the event, along with tours of landmarks across the county. “On June 14, we will have open houses at the courthouse and museum to celebrate the 150th of the county,” Wright said.
