They took the challenge of Big Noon Kickoff and all the shenanigans that come with it, and it didn’t bother them one bit. The Hoosiers are legit, and congrats to them on their 7-0 start. But, as Matt Rhule always says, this is about Nebraska. First of all, save the panic over getting beaten by iNdiAnA as if that’s beneath you as a Husker fan.

I just finished a week-long vacation with the family. My sister, who lives in Mesa, Arizona, just had a baby in June, and not only had I not seen my new niece in person yet, but I’d also never even been to Phoenix since my sister moved there over five years ago. My wife and I loaded up the van and took our four kids on the road. To Arizona. If you’ve never made that drive, I’m here to tell you it is LONG.

Maybe it’s unfair for me, or you, or anyone for that matter, to lump this years’ batch of Huskers in with Nebraska teams from the last decade. Perhaps we shouldn’t hold the shortcomings of the past against the team of the present, even if those shortcomings are quite similar. This is a completely different group of players and coaches, after all.

What a boring game, huh? Here we are nitpicking a defense that only allowed three points. Murmuring about drives that ended in one field goal and no touchdowns. I know it’s been a long time, but do you remember this feeling? If you’re too young to recall, believe me when I tell you this used to happen dang near every fall Saturday in this state. There was once a time when a 31-point win over a non-conference opponents was commonplace, was expected, was the minimum standard for Nebraska football.

The journey was longer than usual. A winding path rather than a straight line. It took a little more time, but it was worth it in the end. Saturday afternoon, ahead of Nebraska-Colorado, I decided to leave the house for downtown Lincoln earlier than I usually do. Knowing that it was the most highly anticipated home game of the early season, coupled with the fact that it was a night game, I wanted to get out and see the atmosphere.
