When the Rangers traded their first-round pick in 2025 to the Vancouver Canucks as part of the package to acquire center J.T. Miller, general manager Chris Drury negotiated the pick to be top-13 protected, meaning if it fell within the top 13 selections, the Rangers would get to keep it this year and give up their first-rounder in 2026 instead. As it turned out, the Rangers missed the playoffs, and the pick ended up falling at No. 12. So now, Drury has a decision to make.

The Rangers have reached agreement with defenseman Matthew Robertson on a two-year contract, the team announced Friday. Robertson, 24, was a second-round draft pick in 2019 and made his NHL debut last season, playing the Rangers' final two games of the regular season. He was the second of 11 restricted free agents to sign with the Rangers this summer, after forward Matt Rempe signed earlier this week.

The Rangers announced Wednesday they have signed forward Matt Rempe to a two-year contract extension that a source said carries an average annual value of $975,000. The 6-9, 255-pound Rempe, who turns 23 on June 29, played 42 games for the Rangers last season. He totaled three goals, five assists and 67 penalty minutes. He served an eight-game suspension for his elbow on Dallas defenseman Miro Heiskanen in December, his second suspension in his two seasons.

McAvoy, 27, was joined by fellow defenseman Quinn Hughes and forwards Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel  and brothers Matthew and Brady Tkachuk as the first six players named to the roster by USA Hockey.

The trade of Chris Kreider Thursday to the Anaheim Ducks was jarring, no doubt, given that Kreider was the longest-tenured Rangers player, and the franchise’s third-leading all-time regular season goal-scorer, and No. 1 all-time playoff goal-scorer. But the move had certainly been expected, ever since that memo from GM Chris Drury to the rest of the league listing Kreider and then-captain Jacob Trouba as on the trading block leaked back in November.
